What to see and do in Argés

Argés
Village
Argés is a municipality in the comarca of Montes de Toledo, in the province of Toledo, with 7,178 inhabitants, situated at the foothills of the sierra, 9 kilometres from Toledo and near the Guajaraz reservoir, a site of interest for birdwatching. Through its former territory ran the 1st-century Roman aqueduct that carried water from this same reservoir to Toledo, and in 1274 the locality appeared as a Toledan hamlet, with dwellings used during the ploughing and harvest seasons. In its old town stand out the church of San Eugenio Mártir, of neoclassical design, and the Casa de Medrano, an old manor house of late-medieval origin with baroque alterations. Its main festivities, in honour of the Rosary and the Virgen de la Soledad, are held on the first weekend of August.

Reservoir of Guajaraz
Nature
A reservoir built between 1970 and 1971 on the Guajaraz stream, a tributary of the Tajo, between the municipal areas of Argés, Layos and Casasbuenas, on the foothills of the Montes de Toledo. It was built to replace the old Roman infrastructure that supplied Toledo, such as the presa de la Alcantarilla, of which only remains survive today, and it supplies drinking water to the city and nearby municipalities as well as regulating the flow of the Tajo. With a dam 46 metres high and 332 metres along its crest, it stores 18 cubic hectometres of water over a surface of 160 hectares. Its surroundings of holm oak woods and Mediterranean scrub, with riverbanks of willows and poplars, are a site of interest for birdwatching, with species such as herons, cormorants and grebes, and it also attracts hikers and anglers.
