What to see and do in Casasbuenas

Casasbuenas
Village
Casasbuenas is a municipality in the comarca of the Montes de Toledo, traditionally attached to La Sisla, in the province of Toledo, about 13 km south of the capital, with 210 inhabitants (INE 2025). Its name may be due to a resettlement by Old Castilians from the 12th century onwards; a Mozarabic document from that century already refers to the hamlet as Casas Bonas. In its territory, watered by the Guajaraz stream, a tributary of the Tagus, an old dam and a bridge are also preserved. Its most distinctive heritage feature is the Chozo del Prao, a dry-stone pastoral building erected on the path of the same name; it also preserves the manor house of the Ayala family, known as El Palacio, and the parish church of Santa Leocadia, patron saint of the locality.
Chozo del Prao (shepherd's hut)
Monument
Dry-stone shepherd's hut on the Prao track, considered the municipality's most distinctive heritage feature.
House-Palace of Diego López de Ayala
Monument
Manor house known locally as El Palacio, linked to the Ayala family line. It preserves architectural features from the village's manorial period.
Church of Santa Leocadia de Casasbuenas
Monument
The parish church of Santa Leocadia, patroness of Casasbuenas (Montes de Toledo), stands within the village itself and its feast is celebrated on 9 December. The geographical dictionary of Pascual Madoz, in the 19th century, already recorded it as a second-rank curacy, a category that indicated the endowment and importance of the parish within the diocese.
