What to see and do in Villaluenga de la Sagra

Villaluenga de la Sagra
Village
Villaluenga de la Sagra is a municipality of La Sagra, in the province of Toledo, whose name alludes to the long distance it stretches towards the east, and is documented since 1477. In the early 16th century the lords of the place were the Silva family; the castle of Águila gave its name to the marquisate created by Philip IV in 1639 in favour of Juan Francisco Silva y Ribera. In the early 20th century, the Asland Company acquired the Águila hill, with the ruins of the medieval castle, to site its cement factory there. Its industrial profile was defined by this cement factory, inaugurated in 1928 by Alfonso XIII; it preserves the parish church of San Andrés Apóstol, two protected railway stations and the remains of the castle of Águila. It has 4,308 inhabitants (INE 2025).

Ruins of the Castillo del Águila
Monument
Remains of the medieval fortress that gave its name to the Marquisate of El Águila, created by Philip IV in 1639. It stood on the Monte del Águila, later occupied by the cement factory.
Asland Cement Factory
Curiosity
Opened in 1928 by King Alfonso XIII in the presence of Prime Minister Primo de Rivera, it turned Villaluenga into one of Europe's leading centres for building materials and shaped the industrial character of the town.
Railway Stations of Villaluenga
Monument
The municipality of Villaluenga de la Sagra (Toledo) preserves two railway stations protected for their architectural value. Villaluenga-Yuncler, on the Madrid-Talavera line and the head of the branch to Algodor, remains operational for line changes and is now used only for freight and for diverting trains to repair workshops. Villaluenga-Asland, on the Algodor line, served the workers of the Asland cement factory, which financed its construction, and is now abandoned; the line is in very poor condition along some stretches.
Festivities of Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes

Villaluenga de la Sagra celebrates its patronal festivities in honor of Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes on the 24th of September.
