What to see and do in Cobeja

Cobeja
Village
A municipality in the comarca of La Sagra, in the province of Toledo, 32 km from the capital and at an altitude of 504 metres, probably of Celtic origin, later inhabited by Hispano-Romans and Mozarabs. After the capture of Toledo by Alfonso VI in 1086 it passed to the Chapter of Toledo Cathedral, which administered its justice and its abundant vine and wheat crops until 1833; it was resettled in 1155 with 48 inhabitants and received a settlement charter in the late 13th century. Brick- and tile-making, the main economic activity since ancient times, today employs roughly a third of the working population, and the municipal coat of arms approved in 1985 features a roof tile alongside the primatial cross, a bunch of grapes and a sheaf of wheat; a historic fountain from 1702 is preserved in its town centre. It has 2719 inhabitants (INE 2025).
Church of San Juan Bautista de Cobeja
Monument
The church of San Juan Bautista de Cobeja (Toledo) preserves its brick Mudejar tower, dated 1788, with three tiers topped by a black slate spire and a lead finial; an inscription commemorates the priest Soriano, parish priest at that date. The original body of the temple, in poor condition, was demolished and rebuilt in 1974 in a modern architectural style, incorporating stained-glass windows dedicated to the Trinity and the Last Supper. A ribbed granite baptismal font, dated 1603, predating the reconstruction, is also preserved.
Spring of 1702 de Cobeja
Monument
A historic fountain in the town center bearing the inscription REINANDO CARLOS IIII AÑO DE 1702; SIENDO ALCALDE CELESTINO FERNANDES; ESTA OBRA SE YZO A EXPENSAS DE LOS PROPIOS. Located south of the municipality, it is the oldest surviving hydraulic structure in Cobeja: a central body with four light-stone spouts that channel water from an underground spring running through much of the municipal area. It originally also had a large pool, a washing place, and a trough for livestock; today only the central body of the spouts survives, surrounded by a basin that collects the water.
The brick industry in Cobeja
Curiosity
Brick and tile making employs roughly a third of the working population, which is why the municipal coat of arms approved in 1985 includes a roof tile alongside the primatial cross, the bunch of grapes and the sheaf of wheat.
