What to see and do in Palomeque

Palomeque
Village
Palomeque is a municipality in the comarca of La Sagra, in the province of Toledo, set on a high plain surrounded by ravines, with 1213 inhabitants. Documented as Palombec in 1173, its first settlers were Mozarabs, who made use of the hydrography of the Chorreras stream, a tributary of the Guadarrama, for the irrigation that still marks its farming landscape. There was also a Roman presence, attested by tombstones and inscriptions in neighbouring villages, and a Muslim one, with settlements and raids typical of a frontier land, when the castle of Olmos stood nearby. In the 15th century the place became consolidated within the commandery of Olmos, of the Order of St John of Jerusalem, and today it celebrates its patronal festivities in honour of St John the Baptist.

Monument

Arroyo de las Chorreras
Nature
Watercourse that the earliest Mozarabic settlers used for irrigation and that continues to shape Palomeque's agricultural landscape. It is a tributary of the río Guadarrama, which in turn marks the boundary with El Viso de San Juan and Chozas de Canales, and it crosses the municipal area of Palomeque in a southeast-to-northwest direction.
