Majaelrayo
Village
Majaelrayo is a municipality in the Serranía de Guadalajara, situated at 1,185 metres altitude, in the black slate architecture area. In the mid-19th century it had 442 inhabitants; it later suffered notable depopulation, worsened in the second half of the 20th century, until it was reduced to the 60 it has today, although in recent years it has begun to regain population, including some young couples with children. Its economy, previously based on livestock farming and charcoal-making, now centres on rural tourism and the restoration of old buildings of heritage value. Its parish church is dedicated to San Juan Bautista, and the town was part of the Comunidad de Villa y Tierra de Ayllón, with the Jarama river running through its municipal area.
