La Huerce
Village
La Huerce is a municipality in the Serranía de Guadalajara, with 52 inhabitants, situated on a large south-facing slope of bare rock, at 1,257 metres altitude. It lies within the area of influence of the black architecture of the Sierra Norte de Guadalajara, at the foot of the Mojón Cimero and with views of the eastern face of Mount Ocejón, surrounded by channels and streams, holm oak and oak woods, black pine and steppe. It comprises the settlements of La Huerce, Valdepinillos and the depopulated hamlet of Umbralejo. In the mid-19th century the place had 146 registered inhabitants, almost three times as many as it has today, a sign of the depopulation this mountainous area of the province has experienced over the last century and a half.
