Bustares
Village
Bustares is a municipality in the northern sierra of Guadalajara, on the black architecture route at the foot of the Sierra de Alto Rey, with 62 inhabitants (INE 2025); its name, of uncertain origin, shares a root with Bustarviejo near Madrid and may come from the Latin bos-stare, 'pasture or grazing land for oxen'. Its vernacular buildings, of gneiss stone, form part of the black architecture route. It preserves the church of San Lorenzo, from the 13th century, of which the Romanesque bell-gable, portal and baptismal font survive, as well as a 16th-century processional cross and an alabaster carving of the Virgin of la Trapa; also the hermitage of Santo Alto Rey, of Templar origin, at 1,852 m, where on the first Saturday of September a romería (pilgrimage) designated Interés Turístico Provincial (Provincial Tourist Interest) is held.
