Valfermoso de Tajuña
Village
Valfermoso de Tajuña is a municipality in the comarca of La Alcarria, in the province of Guadalajara, with 77 inhabitants, set on the peak of a plateau overlooking the vega of the Tajuña river, with panoramic views from the lookout known as the Balcón del Tajuña, formerly called Peñasco. It was originally named Valfermoso de las Sogas, after the rope-making industry it was engaged in, and was reconquered in the late 11th century. Its castle, of which only the ruins of the main tower and a large cistern of Arab origin, now turned into a museum, remain today, was built in the mid-15th century by Pedro Laso de Mendoza. The church of San Pedro Apóstol dates from the 16th century, of large dimensions and with a Renaissance portal. The romería of the Virgen de la Vega is celebrated on the last Sunday of May.
