What to see and do in Peñalver

Peñalver
Village
Peñalver is a municipality of La Alcarria, in Guadalajara, at 935 m of altitude and 34 km from the provincial capital, with the valley of the Vega stream and the Cueva de los Hermanicos on the Alto de Peñalver. In the late 12th century the Order of Saint John received the town as a donation from Alfonso VIII, and its castle was the head of a commandery until the 16th century; from it comes the cross on the municipal coat of arms. Tradition holds that around 1226 two Knights of Saint John founded a hermitage to the Virgin here, the origin of the monastery of San Miguel de la Salceda, now in ruins. Every March the village, with 172 inhabitants, weighs a guest and gives him the equivalent in jars of honey, a festival linked to a designation of origin from 1992 that protects its rosemary and lavender honeys, along with a museum of the beehive and wax.
