Irueste
Village
Irueste is a municipality of La Alcarria, in the province of Guadalajara, situated at 780 metres above sea level in the valley of the San Andrés stream, a tributary of the Tajuña, at the foot of the Alcarria plateau, some 37 km from the provincial capital. Its name, of pre-Roman origin related to Basque, may mean 'city with a stockade'. As a village it belonged to the común of town and land of Guadalajara from 1133 until its residents bought town status in 1647. In December 1710, during the War of the Spanish Succession, the Austracist army crossed the valley along the Camino Real, between the hermitage and the medieval bridge, on its way to the battle of Villaviciosa. It preserves the parish church of the Purísima Concepción, already mentioned in 1575, the hermitage of the Santo Cristo and that old bridge. It has 93 inhabitants (2025).
