What to see and do in Alhóndiga

Alhóndiga
Village
Alhóndiga sits at 815 metres in the La Alcarria comarca of Guadalajara, in the valley of the river Arlés, a tributary of the Tagus, next to the Chorro ravine and 41 kilometres from the provincial capital; the only nearby crossing of the Tagus is a bridge just over six kilometres away. Its name, recorded as Alfondega or Alfondegam, comes from the Arabic al-fundaq, “inn” or “hostelry”, and may have originated as a stopping place on the road between Guadalajara and Cuenca. The Carta Puebla, dated 1170, records how the hospitaller prior Juan settled Alhóndiga on behalf of the Order of the Hospital of Jerusalem, exempting the new settlers from taxes during the first year. It preserves the church of San Juan Bautista and a pillory, both from the 16th century.
