Berninches
Village
Berninches is a municipality of La Alcarria, in Guadalajara, with 51 inhabitants (INE 2025), in the valley formed by the river Arlés at its source, perched on the slope of Las Matas, between 830 and 1,039 metres above sea level. The plaza Mayor organises the village around its parish church of la Asunción, from the 16th century, with a recently restored Baroque altarpiece; four other fountains are scattered around the village, among them the Estefanía, the oldest. The hermitage of El Collado, documented as a priory around 1397, hosts a pilgrimage on the last weekend of May, and the main festival is celebrated on 8 September. Dry-farmed crops of wheat, barley and sunflower occupy the páramo, while the vega, irrigated by the Arlés, is given over to orchards and fruit trees.
