Municipality of the comarca of La Alcarria, in the province of Guadalajara, whose collegiate church displays in the parish museum four great fifteenth-century Flemish tapestries on the campaigns of Alfonso V of Portugal in Arzila and Tangier; sold by Charles V in 1541, it came to be a duchy of Ruy Gómez de Silva and of Ana de Mendoza, the princess of Éboli, who spent her last years confined in the ducal palace until 1592, and in 1569 Saint Teresa of Ávila founded two Carmelite convents here, in one of which Saint John of the Cross took his vows.
