Hontoba
Village
Hontoba is a municipality of La Alcarria, in the province of Guadalajara, situated at the bottom of the valley formed by the San Sebastián stream, a tributary of the Tajuña, with 475 inhabitants. It was a Muslim village until Alfonso VII reconquered it in 1124; his grandson Alfonso VIII granted it to the Order of Calatrava, under whose lordship it remained until the Catholic Monarchs incorporated its lands into the Crown at the end of the 15th century. According to tradition, the Virgen de los Llanos appeared in the Middle Ages to a shepherd where her hermitage now stands, at the foot of the ravine, and since then the villagers have gone up in pilgrimage to what was also a monastery of Hieronymites until the disentailment of 1836. It preserves the church of San Pedro, with a 13th-century apse, and the hermitage, from the 17th century and today in ruins.
