Carlos V sold the town in 1541 to Ana de la Cerda. Her granddaughter Ana de Mendoza married Ruy Gómez de Silva, secretary to Felipe II, and the couple received the ducal title. The princess of Éboli spent her last years confined in the ducal palace, until her death in 1592.
