Lupiana
Village
Lupiana is a municipality of La Alcarria, in the province of Guadalajara, at 773 metres above sea level, with 344 inhabitants. Until 1569 it was a village subject to the jurisdiction of the Común de Villa y Tierra de Guadalajara, though the head of one of its sexmas; its importance grew from 1330, when Diego Martínez de la Cámara founded a hermitage of San Bartolomé that gave rise to the monastery which in 1374 Pedro Fernández Pecha established as the mother house of the newly founded Order of Saint Jerome. The monastery's rise led Lupiana to seek its own jurisdiction, a process that culminated in 1569, when the monks offered Philip II the patronage of the main chapel in exchange for the privilege of town status. The monastery preserves the church's portal and the main cloister, begun in 1535 to a design by Alonso de Covarrubias.
