Founded in 1374 over an earlier hermitage by Pedro Fernández Pecha, it is the mother house of the Order of Saint Jerome, approved by Gregory XI a year earlier. It preserves the great cloister begun in 1535 to a design by Alonso de Covarrubias and the doorway of the church.
