What to see and do in Poyatos

Poyatos
Village
Poyatos is a municipality in the Serranía Alta district, in the province of Cuenca, with 70 inhabitants (INE 2025), crossed from east to west by the river Escabas, hemmed in between limestone walls, with the Poyatos ravine as an attraction for canyoning. The historic ensemble, declared for its monumental richness, is arranged around a 16th-century Renaissance main square with the town hall and the church of Santa María Magdalena, Gothic and Renaissance in style; a tower from the old town wall and the council arch are also preserved. This urban development was driven in the 16th century by Miguel Muñoz, a native of the village and bishop of Cuenca between 1547 and 1553. In 2009 an intentional fire destroyed close to 1,800 hectares of woodland in its municipal area.
Church of Santa María Magdalena de Poyatos
Monument
Parish church combining Gothic and Renaissance elements, built during the great development experienced by Poyatos in the 16th century, driven by the bishop of Cuenca Miguel Muñoz, a native of the village. It stands on the town's central square, next to the town hall, and is one of the elements that led to Poyatos being declared a conjunto histórico (a protection designation for urban and monumental heritage), owing to its monumental richness.
16th-century Square of Poyatos
Monument
16th-century main square forming the core of the conjunto histórico (a protection designation for urban and monumental heritage) of Poyatos, in the Serranía Alta of Cuenca, largely the fruit of the drive of the local bishop Miguel Muñoz. Notable there are the town hall, with a façade of four cylindrical columns and a wide wooden balcony, and the parish church of Santa María Magdalena, which mixes Gothic and Renaissance styles. Nearby are preserved a tower of the old town wall and the Arco del Concejo, a symbolic entrance to the village.
Miguel Muñoz, Bishop of Cuenca
Curiosity
The building drive that transformed Poyatos in the 16th century is owed to Miguel Muñoz, a native of the village, who was bishop of Cuenca between 1547 and 1553 and also president of the Chancillería de Valladolid. Around 1550 he was patron of the sculptor Pedro Martínez de Castañeda, whom he allowed to begin his career as an independent artist.
The Escabas River as it flows through Poyatos
Nature
The Escabas crosses the municipality of Poyatos from east to west, cutting between limestone walls along a stretch used for hiking and canyoning. The barranco de Poyatos, well equipped, offers rappels of up to 20 metres in an enclosed area of fine scenic appearance.
