The building drive that transformed Poyatos in the 16th century is owed to Miguel Muñoz, a native of the village, who was bishop of Cuenca between 1547 and 1553 and also president of the Chancillería de Valladolid. Around 1550 he was patron of the sculptor Pedro Martínez de Castañeda, whom he allowed to begin his career as an independent artist.
