What to see and do in Santa María del Val

Santa María del Val
Village
Santa María del Val is a municipality in the Serranía Alta district, in the province of Cuenca, with barely 55 inhabitants, spread among the crags and valleys carved by the river Cuervo. Its name comes from the Virgen del Val, patron saint of Alcalá de Henares. It is a village rich in nature, with the presence of golden eagle, wildcat, deer and Iberian wild goat, and in the mid-19th century its municipal area was covered with pine, box and other shrubs. Its parish church is dedicated to San Bernardino de Siena, and it also has the hermitage of the Santo Cristo de la Misericordia. The inhabitants today live mainly from livestock farming and from the natural resources the surrounding area offers.

A name brought from Alcalá de Henares
Curiosity
The village's name comes from Nuestra Señora la Virgen del Val, patron saint of Alcalá de Henares, a devotion that reached this mountain hamlet. The village, already described in Pascual Madoz's geographical dictionary in the mid-19th century, has its parish church dedicated to Saint Bernardine of Siena and also has the hermitage of the Holy Christ of Mercy. Today Santa María del Val has just over 55 inhabitants.
