What to see and do in Vega del Codorno

Vega del Codorno
Village
Municipality of the comarca of Serranía Alta, in the province of Cuenca, with no compact centre: its quarters are spread across the upper Cuervo valley, among them El Perchel, where the interpretation centre of the natural monument of the Source of the River Cuervo is set up, declared in 1991 over 1,709 hectares around the spring that rises at 1,470 metres and plunges over a travertine crag; from these heights sets out the Cañada Real Conquense, still travelled by transhumant flocks each autumn.
Natural Monument of the Source of the Cuervo River
Nature
Declared a natural monument in 1991, it protects 1,709 hectares around the spring that gushes from the rock at 1,470 metres on the San Felipe tableland. Five hundred metres from its source the water plunges over a great travertine cliff.
Interpretation Centre of the Source of the Cuervo River
Monument
Visitor centre for the natural monument, located in the El Perchel quarter, where the travertine formation and the setting of the upper Cuervo are explained.
The frozen waterfalls of the Cuervo
Curiosity
In the harshest winters the water running down the moss-covered tufa stalactites freezes completely, turning the source of the Cuervo into a much-photographed spectacle of ice.
The scattered hamlets of Vega del Codorno
Curiosity
The municipality has no compact centre but rather quarters scattered across the upper valley of the Cuervo, grouped into upper quarters (El Perchel, Los Perales, La Cueva), middle ones (El Collado, El Molino, La Iglesia) and lower ones (Los Eustaquios, Los Demetrios, El Tío Miguelete).
One of the highest and coldest villages in Cuenca
Curiosity
Lying at 1,450 metres above sea level, Vega del Codorno has an extreme continental climate, with frequent snow between November and April and lows dropping below -15 °C.
The Royal Drove Road of Cuenca
Historical milestone
From these heights sets out the Cañada Real Conquense, also called de los Chorros, one of the great Castilian livestock droving routes that runs down from the Serranía de Cuenca to the winter pastures of the south, crossing the provinces of Cuenca, Ciudad Real and part of Jaén. Organized administratively by Alfonso VIII, who generously granted the land of Cuenca through which it passes rights and boundaries, it took part of its course alongside the old forge of Los Chorros, near which there was also a chapel. Formalized in the time of the Mesta, created in 1273, it is still walked by transhumant flocks every autumn.
The mushrooms of the pine forests
Food and drink
The pine forests of these heights give boletus, saffron milk caps and poplar mushrooms from the end of summer until the first frosts. They are stewed with garlic and parsley, added to scrambled eggs or dried for the winter in the houses of the town.
