What to see and do in Campillo de Altobuey

Campillo de Altobuey
Village
Municipality of the comarca of La Manchuela Conquense, in the province of Cuenca, which historically functioned as a stop on the road from Madrid to Valencia and preserves the church of San Andrés, of the sixteenth century, with a tower visible several kilometres away, and the chapel of la Trinidad, of the end of the same century; the festivals of the Virgen de la Loma can double the municipality's population.
Church of San Andrés de Campillo de Altobuey
Monument
The church of San Andrés, a 16th-century parish church located on the main square of Campillo de Altobuey (Cuenca), is a columned temple with three naves and a hall-church plan, in Renaissance style. In the 17th century the valuable original coffered ceiling was covered with barrel vaults and a dome was raised over the crossing, decorated with rich murals. Its bell tower, of five tiers and great height, is visible from several kilometres away.
Shrine of la Virgen de la Loma
Monument
The sanctuary of the Virgen de la Loma, a former convent of San Agustín and a Baroque building from the early 18th century, stands on the spot where, according to tradition, the Virgin appeared to a traveller, which is why the building was erected in honour of this Marian devotion venerated in Campillo de Altobuey (Cuenca). Its feast day is celebrated on 8 September, the date until which the image remains in the sanctuary during the novena period, after being brought from the parish church of San Andrés, located in the town centre, where it resides for the rest of the year owing to the sanctuary's distance from the town.
Hermitage of la Trinidad de Campillo de Altobuey
Monument
A hermitage built at the end of the 16th century, one of several historic chapels in the municipality along with those of El Cristo and San Roque. Its main altarpiece was commissioned in 1594 from the painter Bartolomé Matarana, although much of the pictorial work is attributed to Fernando Mayorga, and it is preserved in the church.
Santa Quiteria hill of Campillo de Altobuey
Nature
The Cerro de Santa Quiteria is a rise close to the town centre of Campillo de Altobuey, in the Manchuela Conquense (Cuenca), and one of the most frequented spots in the municipality along with the San Isidro pine wood. Remains of an ancient Olcade settlement some 2000 years old have been found there: part of its walls, ruins, cinerary urns, pottery and adobe bricks.
Campillo, a stop on the Madrid-Valencia road
Curiosity
Campillo de Altobuey (Cuenca) was for centuries a place of passage and rest on the old royal road from Madrid to Valencia, known as the Camino de las Cabrillas, and came to hold the right to collect a toll for being located at a dry mountain pass, that of Pajazo. Emperor Charles V spent a night in the town on 27 April 1528 on his way to Valencia, and during the War of the Spanish Succession, in 1706, Archduke Charles also stopped in the village to rest before continuing his journey.
Festivities of la Virgen de la Loma
Activity
Patron saint festivities of Campillo de Altobuey in honour of the Virgen de la Loma, whose feast day is celebrated on 8 September. According to tradition, the Virgin appeared to a traveller at the spot where the former convent of San Agustín, now its sanctuary, stands today; the image is carried there during the novena before the festival, but owing to its distance from the town it has been decided that it should remain for most of the year in the parish church of San Andrés, in the centre of the village. During these days the population of the municipality can double with the arrival of visitors from neighbouring districts.
"Widowed" gazpachos
Food and drink
The meatless version of the shepherds' gazpachos: the unleavened flatbread is cooked with mushrooms, tomato and vegetables instead of with game. It was made on days of abstinence and has remained a dish of its own in the Manchuela repertoire.
