What to see and do in Graja de Iniesta

Graja de Iniesta
Village
Graja de Iniesta is a municipality in the comarca of La Manchuela Conquense, in the province of Cuenca, at 836 metres above sea level on the flat, undulating terrain of the comarca. It was founded around 1185, when Christian troops took the town of Iniesta and decided to found a hamlet called Graja a few kilometres beyond, a surname added later to distinguish it from other localities of the same name. With 343 inhabitants, it preserves the parish church dedicated to Saint George, patron of its festivities, celebrated on 23 April, as well as the Feast of the Cross on 3 May, and a surviving tower from the 19th-century optical telegraph network.
Church of San Jorge de Graja de Iniesta
Monument
A parish church dedicated to San Jorge, patron saint of this town, which came into being around 1185 as a forward outpost after the conquest of Iniesta.
Tower of telegrafía óptica de Graja de Iniesta
Monument
Surviving tower of the 19th-century Spanish optical telegraph network, also called La Mochuela, preserved in Graja de Iniesta, in the district of La Manchuela Conquense. It was part of the line that was to link Madrid with Barcelona via Valencia, built between 1848 and 1849 as part of a system that, through visual signals relayed from tower to tower, allowed a message to reach the last station from the first in just half an hour. The Madrid-Valencia line had thirty towers, from the Aduana de Madrid to the now-vanished convent of San Francisco in Valencia. These towers, staffed by telegraphists of military background, were built as fortified buildings, as can be seen in the one at Graja de Iniesta.
Festivities of San Jorge de Graja de Iniesta
