What to see and do in Puebla del Salvador

Puebla del Salvador
Village
Puebla del Salvador is a municipality in La Manchuela Conquense, in Cuenca, at 850 m above sea level, whose origin as a legal entity dates back to the late 13th or early 14th century, perhaps through resettlement by people from Iniesta, until it obtained the Royal Privilege of Villazgo in 1628. It has 190 inhabitants (INE 2025). Its church of San Salvador was built in 1566 and shares prominence with the hermitage of la Concepción, around which the Hermandad Antigua, founded in 1600, is centred; Emperor Charles V and Prince Philip spent the night in the town on 19 December 1542, on their way to Madrid.
Church of San Salvador de Puebla del Salvador
Monument
The church of San Salvador in Puebla del Salvador was built in 1566 at the expense of Gil de Peñarrubia. It is the main monument of the municipality, together with the nearby hermitage of la Concepción, located on one of the small squares of the village.
Charles V and Philip II in Puebla del Salvador
Curiosity
Emperor Charles V and the then Prince Philip, later Philip II, spent the night in the town on 19 December 1542, as their procession made its way towards Madrid. The stay was recorded by the court chronicler Juan de Vandenesse, and has been studied in the work by Manuel Martínez Tórtola titled Un alto en el camino: el emperador Carlos V en Puebla del Salvador.
The Old Brotherhood of the Conception
Curiosity
Confraternity based in the parish church of the Transfiguración del Señor, in Puebla del Salvador (Cuenca), founded in 1600 by the venerable Bartolomé Ximénez. It holds its processional outing every 15 August in honour of María Santísima de la Concepción, a devotion rooted in the village since its late repopulation between the end of the 13th century and the beginning of the 16th, when the original settlement was organised around a temple dedicated to the Purísima. Local tradition links this devotion to the passing of Emperor Charles V, who spent the night in the town on 19 December 1542 on the way to Madrid together with his son Philip II, and it is said that the monarchs prayed before the village's image of the Purísima Concepción.
Festivities of Santa Quiteria de Puebla del Salvador
Activity
Festivity in honour of Santa Quiteria, patron saint of the town, with a procession and popular events. It is held on 28 May, the feast day of this virgin and martyr venerated as patron saint of Puebla del Salvador.
