Almodóvar del Pinar
Village
Almodóvar del Pinar is a municipality in Serranía Media-Campichuelo y Serranía Baja, in Cuenca, with 401 inhabitants, at 993 m, surrounded by pine forests, between the 1,074 m Cerro Cachorro and the 920 m river Valdemembra. Its name comes from the Arabic al-mudawwar, “the round one”; its origin dates back to an 11th-century Arab outpost; after the conquest by Alfonso VIII, between 1177 and 1184, it became a lordship, and the Arab fortress was dismantled to build the church tower with its stones. In 1452 Juan II handed the town over to Rodrigo Manrique, father of the poet Jorge Manrique, and in 1467 it passed to Martín de Alarcón, remembered as a cruel lord. It preserves the church of la Asunción, from the 15th century with an 18th-century portico, hermitages from the 15th to 18th centuries, and the Cerro de los Cubos archaeological site.
