Campillo, a stop on the Madrid-Valencia road Curiosity · Campillo de Altobuey, La Manchuela Conquense, Cuenca Image of Campillo de Altobuey, not of the place itself. Campillo de Altobuey (Cuenca) was for centuries a place of passage and rest on the old royal road from Madrid to Valencia, known as the Camino de las Cabrillas, and came to hold the right to collect a toll for being located at a dry mountain pass, that of Pajazo. Emperor Charles V spent a night in the town on 27 April 1528 on his way to Valencia, and during the War of the Spanish Succession, in 1706, Archduke Charles also stopped in the village to rest before continuing his journey.
