Los Hinojosos
Village
Los Hinojosos, in La Mancha Conquense (Cuenca), has 702 inhabitants (2025) over 113.95 km², situated in the heart of La Mancha Alta, territory that belonged to the former Priory of Uclés. Settled by Iberians and Celtiberians — of whom the so-called Phallic Temple survives, today the Santo de la Hontanilla —, its documented founding is attributed to the Olcades tribe, who helped defeat the chieftain Viriatus. The municipality was split into two jurisdictions by an episcopal decision of 1232 whose boundary line crossed the town itself, giving rise to its two parishes and its two patron saint festivities: the Virgen del Carmen, on 16 July, and the Virgen de la Morenita, on 15 August. The church of San Bernabé, from the 16th and 17th centuries, combines Renaissance and baroque design with a plateresque tower.
