Santa María de los Llanos
Village
Santa María de los Llanos is a municipality in the Mancha Baja Conquense, in Cuenca, about 110 km from the provincial capital, with 660 inhabitants on flat land at 711 m of altitude, through which flows the Saona river, a tributary of the Záncara. Its origin dates to 1290, with the resettlement of residents from the Puebla del Aljeve, and its church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción was founded in 1400; by the mid-19th century it already had 1,018 inhabitants. The patronal festivities, in honour of the Virgen de los Llanos and San Roque, are celebrated from 14 to 18 August with a pilgrimage, and the village also keeps the feast of San Antón on 17 January, considered one of the earliest carnivals in Castilla-La Mancha.
