Osa de la Vega
Village
Osa de la Vega is a municipality in La Mancha Conquense, in Cuenca, with 450 inhabitants (INE 2025) over 53.01 km². Its name probably comes from fossa, on account of the territory's numerous pits, among them the Roman mines of Las Obradas and la Horadada, where local tradition places Sancho Panza's fall on leaving the island of Barataria; from the 12th century it is documented as Ossa, in the 14th as Ossa de Belmonte, and since the 18th in its current form. The territory holds the Las Obradas mines, one of the main European complexes for extracting lapis specularis in the 1st and 2nd centuries, within the territory of Segóbriga. Its parish church of la Asunción is late Gothic with Renaissance elements, and the municipality has a significant almond production.
