What to see and do in Villaescusa de Haro

Villaescusa de Haro
Village
Villaescusa de Haro is a municipality in the comarca of La Mancha Conquense, in the province of Cuenca, 90 km from the capital. It has 480 inhabitants (INE 2025) who live mainly from agriculture and livestock farming, in a municipal area dominated to the north by the Sierra de Haro and the Sierra de Villa. Here, Diego Ramírez de Villaescusa founded a college that he intended to turn into a university, a project halted after the death of Isabella the Catholic in 1504 and Cardinal Cisneros's backing of Alcalá de Henares; from that attempt remain the buildings of the old, never-completed university. Its parish church of San Pedro, a national monument since 1931, was built in late Gothic and Renaissance style, and preserves the altarpiece of the Assumption.
