What to see and do in Higueruela

Higueruela
Village
Municipality of the comarca of Monte Ibérico-Corredor de Almansa, in the province of Albacete, founded around 1350 in the resettlements of the lordship of Villena and separated from Chinchilla de Monte-Aragón in 1820; its church of Santa Quiteria is a Neoclassical work of the late eighteenth century by the academician Lorenzo Alonso Franco. The district culminates in the Molatón peak, of 1,245 metres, holds the salt lagoon of El Salobralejo and a wind farm that was once the largest in Europe, and its garnacha tintorera vineyards give dense, deeply coloured wines.
Church of Santa Quiteria de Higueruela
Monument
A neoclassical church of the late 18th century by the academician Lorenzo Alonso Franco. It houses an image of Saint Anthony of Padua attributed to Roque López and a Gothic-Renaissance carving of the patron saint.
Molatón Peak
Nature
A 1,245-metre peak at the eastern end of the municipal district of Higueruela, the highest point in the municipality and an excellent viewpoint over the Almansa corridor.
Lagoon of el Salobralejo
Nature
Saline wetland in the municipal area of Higueruela, near Villar de Chinchilla, part of the group of steppe lagoons in eastern Albacete. It lies a few kilometres from the village, level with the railway station on the Madrid-Alicante line, and is surrounded by three small hamlets: El Salobralejo, la Casa de Justi and Emiliete.
Festivities of Santa Quiteria de Higueruela
Activity
Main festivities of Higueruela (Monte Ibérico-Corredor de Almansa, Albacete) in honour of Saint Quiteria, with two processions because the village venerates two images of the saint: the more recent one goes out in the morning procession on 22 May and the older one in the afternoon procession on the 23rd. The parish church holds a small Gothic-Renaissance sculpture of the saint. On the Saturdays of May, the commissions' communal meals, the crowning of the court of honour and a pilgrimage follow one another, completing the festive programme.
The wind farm of Higueruela
Curiosity
The wind farm built in the municipal district of Higueruela was, at the time of its construction, the largest in Europe and the second largest in the world by installed capacity.
The independence of Higueruela
Curiosity
Founded around 1350 as part of the resettlement of the seigneury of Villena, Higueruela broke away from Chinchilla de Monte-Aragón and set up its own town council in 1820.
The Garnacha Tintorera of Higueruela
Food and drink
A red-fleshed variety, rare in Spain and dominant in these uplands of the Monte Ibérico, which gives dense, deeply colored wines of ripe fruit. The wines made in the village have been repeatedly awarded prizes outside the comarca.
