What to see and do in Alatoz

Alatoz
Village
Municipality of the comarca of La Manchuela, in the province of Albacete, originally called La Toz, whose church of San Juan Bautista was declared a Monumento Histórico-Artístico (Spain's heritage designation in force between 1931 and 1985) in 1983 and restored in recent years; its district preserves the Vallejo del Hontanar, along which the Vereda Real runs with remains of wayside inns and cart ruts, and the Reventón ravine, and in its cooking the shepherds' gazpachos set on unleavened flatbread are kept up.
Church of San Juan Bautista de Alatoz
Monument
Parish church declared a Monumento Histórico-Artístico (a national heritage-protection designation, precursor to the BIC) on 24 November 1983 and restored in recent years, recognisable by its bell tower. It is an 18th-century building about whose construction little is known: in 1761 the chancel and transept already existed, though without a roof, and the works were completed in 1780 with the solemn blessing of the building. Built of lime-and-rubble masonry with courses of brick, in the manner of Toledan-style coursing, it has a Latin-cross plan with connected side chapels and a transept covered by a dome on pendentives. Inside, the Neoclassical altarpiece stands out, the work of Lorenzo Alonso Franco from 1806, together with figures by Roque López, a disciple of Francisco Salzillo, among which a Nazareno and a dressed Dolorosa are especially notable.
Vallejo del Hontanar
Nature
A pastoral valley in the municipal district of Alatoz through which the Vereda Real del Hontanar runs, with the remains of inns such as Los Blasotes and cart ruts still visible.
Reventón ravine
Nature
A system of ravines in the municipal district of Alatoz, one of the municipality's most scenically interesting spots along with the Cañada de La Gitana.
Festivities of la Virgen del Rosario de Alatoz
Activity
The municipality's autumn patronal festivities, in addition to those of San Juan Bautista on 24 June and the Cultural Fortnight in the first half of August. According to the article on the municipality, the Virgen del Rosario is celebrated on the first Sunday of October, and the Cultural Fortnight, organised by the town council with the collaboration of local cultural associations, runs from 1 to 15 August.
From La Toz to Alatoz
Curiosity
The municipality was originally called La Toz, from which the present name derives; the popular belief that it comes from the expression vamos al hato has no basis. The 1591 census attributed to it only seventeen households, and its population reached its peak in 1930 with 1,873 inhabitants, a figure that has declined over time to the 506 inhabitants recorded in 2025.
Los gazpachos de pastor con torta cenceña
Food and drink
A stew of pastoral origin set over pieces of unleavened flatbread with broth of rabbit, hare or partridge, mushrooms and wild herbs; in Lent the meatless version is prepared, known in the comarca as gazpachos viudos.
