What to see and do in Villavaliente

Villavaliente
Village
Villavaliente is a municipality in the comarca of La Manchuela, in Albacete, with 190 inhabitants, 39 km from the provincial capital. In the Iberian period there was in its territory a settlement called Valenbonga, on the border between the Edetani and the Contestani; already in the Middle Ages a hamlet known as Casas de Valiente was formed, which over time took the name Villavaliente. It belonged to Jorquera until becoming independent on 13 December 1927, an anniversary it commemorates every year. During the Civil War, in Republican territory, an airfield was built there using labour from the town itself. It preserves the church of San Ildefonso, from the 17th or 18th century and with thick walls of limestone masonry, dry-stone cucos scattered across its territory, and the recreational pine wood of los Hondillos.
Church of San Ildefonso de Villavaliente
Monument
Church of the 17th or 18th century built of limestone masonry with thick walls, dedicated to the municipality's patron saint. It has its entrance door on one side, opposite the altar, six small windows set high up and a bell-gable for two bells. Inside, besides the image of San Ildefonso, are venerated a crucified Holy Christ, a Christ of the Holy Burial and a Risen Christ, the Virgin of Rosario and San Isidro Labrador.
Dry-stone huts of Villavaliente
Monument
Dry-stone structures scattered across the municipal district, built to shelter people and livestock from bad weather and hailstorms.
Park of los Hondillos
Nature
The Parque de los Hondillos is a wooded recreational area at the eastern entrance to Villavaliente (La Manchuela, Albacete), next to the roundabout on the way out towards Alcalá del Júcar and Alatoz. Its tall pines provide shade in summer; it has rest areas with tables and benches, a children's play area, exercise equipment for adults and pétanque courts.
The anniversary of Villavaliente's separation
Activity
The municipality of Villavaliente (La Manchuela, Albacete) commemorates every 13 December the anniversary of its separation from Jorquera, which took place on that same date in 1927. The event gave its name to a street in the town, and other streets recall figures who promoted independence, such as the lawyer Lozano, the governor Carril and the minister Aunós.
The Republican airfield of Villavaliente
Curiosity
During the Civil War, Villavaliente (La Manchuela, Albacete) lay within the zone under Republican control, and an airfield was built there for that side's air force, given the risk that the air bases near Madrid might fall into the hands of the insurgent side. The work was carried out mostly by local labour, which built not only the runways but also all the auxiliary facilities; these were built underground to protect them from possible bombing.
