What to see and do in Corral-Rubio

Corral-Rubio
Village
Municipality of the comarca of Monte Ibérico-Corredor de Almansa, in the province of Albacete, whose district brings together a complex of eighteen depressions, pools and hypersaline lagoons between 855 and 900 metres, an outstanding point for observing flamingos, great bustards, spoonbills and herons; beside the Laguna de La Higuera, where salt was extracted, remain the ruins of the Baños de San José spa, opened in 1928. In the built-up area are preserved the Casa Grande, a sixteenth-century palace linked to the Marquisate of Villena, the Baroque church of San Miguel Arcángel and a nineteenth-century public washhouse still in use.
Great House of Corral-Rubio
Monument
A 16th-century palace linked to the Marquisate of Villena, also called the Palacio de los Núñez after the family coat of arms on its façade. Its courtyard of columns with lintels stands out.
Church of San Miguel Arcángel de Corral-Rubio
Monument
The church of Saint Michael the Archangel presides over Plaza Adolfo Suárez, the main square of Corral-Rubio (Albacete). It is a Baroque temple from the 17th century, with a Classicist 18th-century portal decorated with pyramids topped with balls. Local tradition speaks of an underground tunnel that would have linked the temple with the palace of the Casa Grande, and that would have served as a refuge in times of war and attacks.
San Antonio Washhouse
Monument
The San Antonio wash house, in Corral-Rubio (Albacete), is a 19th-century public wash house renovated in 1921 and still in use: some residents use it to wash large items, especially bed linen and rugs. It is considered one of the most valued ethnographic features of the municipality and is well worth a visit.
Lagoon complex of Corral-Rubio
Nature
A group of eighteen depressions, ponds and lagoons of varied ecological character between 855 and 900 metres above sea level, including hypersaline wetlands. It is an outstanding spot for watching flamingos, great bustards, spoonbills, herons and ducks.
Lagoon of la Higuera y Baños de San José
Nature
A lagoon where salt was historically extracted, beside which survive the ruins of the Baños de San José spa, opened in 1928 to treat rheumatism and skin complaints.
Festivities of San Miguel Arcángel de Corral-Rubio
Activity
Patron saint festivities of Corral-Rubio, held from 24 to 30 September in honour of Saint Michael the Archangel, whose feast day falls on 29 September. They begin on the Saturday of the pregón (opening address) with the gazpachos viudos contest, and have their central moment in the floral offering to the patron saint, on the night of 28 September. During the week a photographic rally is also organised, in which participants take pictures of different corners of the village.
The Assemblies of the Marquisate of Villena
Curiosity
Corral-Rubio hosted the assemblies or Juntas of the Marquisate of Villena, possibly because it was a small, neutral place that favoured none of the great towns of the seigneury.
