What to see and do in Carcelén

Carcelén
Village
Carcelén is a municipality in the district of La Manchuela (Albacete), with 483 inhabitants (INE 2025) and covering 75.36 km², which includes the hamlet of Casas de Juan Gil. It was originally a small hamlet of Almansa that passed to the diocese of Cartagena in 1260; after an attempt by the council of Jorquera to recover it, a royal mandate of 1398 returned it to the marquisate of Villena as an independent town. It retains the castle of the Conde de Casal, from the 14th century and remodelled in the 15th, with a keep and four circular towers, which has served as a prison and town hall; also the church of San Andrés Apóstol, begun in the 16th century, and the Baroque hermitage of the Cristo de las Eras. Its most distinctive festival is Los Montones, with bonfires atop the Piedra del Mediodía and a torch race downhill.
Castle of el Conde de Casal
Monument
A 14th-century fortress remodelled in the 15th, with a keep and four round towers. Over time it served as a prison, a school and a town hall.
Hermitage of el Cristo de las Eras
Monument
The hermitage of the Cristo de las Eras is a Baroque church from the late 17th century located in Carcelén (Albacete), in the region of La Manchuela. It has a Latin cross floor plan and holds, in its chancel, an 18th-century altarpiece together with the image of the Cristo de las Eras, carved in the 17th century. Every 23 August, during the feast of Los Montones, the image is carried in procession from the hermitage to the church of San Andrés, where it remains until the celebrations end.
Church of San Andrés Apóstol de Carcelén
Monument
A church begun in the 16th century on earlier foundations, whose construction was interrupted for lack of funds and was not completed until the 19th century. It was built on a previous structure, keeping its walls, and in the mid-19th century the tower was also restored.
Piedra del Mediodía
Nature
The Piedra del Mediodía is a distinctive crag in the municipality of Carcelén, in the Albacete region of La Manchuela. Every 23 August the feast of Los Montones is celebrated there: at nightfall three piles of firewood are lit atop the crag, and then the participants descend the slope carrying torches to light the way back to the village.
Los Montones of Carcelén
Activity
A festival in which three bonfires are lit on top of the Piedra del Mediodía and a downhill torch race is held to La Pilarica; the winner becomes the following year's fire-bearer.
Carcelén, villa independiente desde 1398
Historical milestone
Carcelén separated in 1398 from the jurisdiction of Jorquera and was constituted as a villa with its own justice, although it remained within the orbit of the marquisate of Villena, which in the count of 1586 still dominated nineteen places in these lands.
