During the Civil War, Villavaliente (La Manchuela, Albacete) lay within the zone under Republican control, and an airfield was built there for that side's air force, given the risk that the air bases near Madrid might fall into the hands of the insurgent side. The work was carried out mostly by local labour, which built not only the runways but also all the auxiliary facilities; these were built underground to protect them from possible bombing.
