Village
Alcalá del Júcar is a municipality in the district of La Manchuela, in the province of Albacete, with 1,130 inhabitants (2025) 64 km from the provincial capital, to which belong the hamlets of Casas del Cerro, Las Eras, La Gila, Tolosa and Zulema. In 1211 Alfonso VIII took the stronghold from the Muslims and it was resettled with colonists from Alarcón; it was a hamlet of Jorquera until Peter I the Cruel granted it town status on 18 April 1364. Wedged into the Júcar gorge, its cluster of whitewashed houses, many of them carved into the rock of the cliff, has been declared a Historic-Artistic Site since 1982 and is dominated by an Almohad castle from the 12th and 13th centuries; in the same cliff face open caves such as that of the Diablo, which runs through the promontory. It has belonged since 2014 to the association Los Pueblos Más Bonitos de España.
