What to see and do in Abengibre

Abengibre
Village
Abengibre is a municipality in the district of La Manchuela, in the province of Albacete, with 753 inhabitants (INE 2025), between the valleys of the Júcar and Cabriel rivers, whose name comes from the Arabic ibn Ǧabr, 'son of Yabr'. It belonged to the State of Jorquera, from which it broke away as an independent municipality in the 19th century; its town centre formed around the church of San Miguel and around that of Casas de Torres, independent until that same period. In February 1934 a farmer chanced upon, in the Vallejo de las Viñas, a set of Iberian silver plaques more than two thousand five hundred years old, now in the Museo Arqueológico Nacional and decisive for the study of Iberian script. It retains a Baroque church with a 17th-century painting of San Miguel and celebrates Moors and Christians.
Parish church of Abengibre
Monument
A Baroque church with a nave covered by a barrel vault with lunettes and a polygonal chancel. It preserves a 17th-century painting of Saint Michael, although most of its artistic heritage, including works attributed to Salzillo, was lost in the Civil War.
Abengibre stream
Nature
The Abengibre stream, also called the Ledaña stream, is a seasonal watercourse that rises in the Cuenca municipality of El Peral and runs south-east through the provinces of Cuenca and Albacete before flowing into the Júcar river, of which it is a tributary. It crosses the municipality of Abengibre from north to south, passing next to the town, and continues to the area of Los Rulos, where it enters the municipality of Jorquera. Along its course, accompanied by springs and by the singular Pino de Juan Molinera, it also passes through the municipalities of Iniesta, Ledaña, Cenizate and Fuentealbilla before reaching Abengibre.
Moors and Christians of Abengibre
Activity
A popular re-enactment in honour of Saint Michael the Archangel, patron saint of Abengibre, celebrated on 29 September. Its text, the Alardes, was written by Bernardino Pérez Iniesta, who signed the Relación en verso de Alardes para Moros y Cristianos dedicated to the saint on 18 September 1879. The re-enactment is structured in four parts: the plea, in which the Christian general and ambassador ask Saint Michael for help against the Moors; a first clash in which the Moors triumph and carry off the saint's image to burn it; a second in which the Christians triumph, recover the image and carry it in procession amid the pealing of bells; and the farewell, with the final conversion of the Moors to Christianity.
The Treasure of Abengibre
Curiosity
In October 1934 the farmer Sebastián Pérez López chanced upon, in the Vallejo de las Viñas area, a rich set of Iberian silver tableware produced between the 4th and 2nd centuries BC. Made up of circular platters, plates and bowls shaped on a lathe and decorated with a chisel with plant motifs and figures of Iberian warriors and animals, six of its plates also bear votive inscriptions in the southern Iberian alphabet. It is thought to have belonged to the ceremonial fittings of a sanctuary, built up through successive offerings and personalised with inscriptions referring to its owners, rather than to everyday use. Kept today in the Museo Arqueológico Nacional, it provided decisive information on Iberian script.
