What to see and do in Rueda de Jalón

Rueda de Jalón
Village
Rueda de Jalón is a municipality in the comarca of Valdejalón, in the province of Zaragoza, with 325 inhabitants (INE 2025) compared with 414 in the mid-19th century; until the 1916 reform it was called simply Rueda. Its name comes from the Arabic Rūta al-Yahūdī, and it was besieged and taken in 934 by Abderramán III during his campaign against rebellious Zaragoza, as recorded by the chronicler Ibn Hayyán, who calls it a 'medina', a rank of greater importance than other towns in the area. Its castle, an alcázar and pleasure palace of the sultans of Saraqusta, gained prominence after the Almoravid entry of 1110: there, under the protection of Alfonso I of Aragon, Abd al-Malik, the last Hudid ruler of Zaragoza, took refuge until his death in 1130. It celebrates San Antonio Abad from 17 to 20 January.
