The chronicler Ibn Hayyan recorded that in 934 Abd al-Rahman III besieged and took by force the stronghold of Ruta, in present-day Rueda de Jalón, during his campaign against rebel Zaragoza. The castle served as palace and refuge for the lords of the valley.
