Clarés de Ribota
Village
Clarés de Ribota is a small municipality in the Comunidad de Calatayud comarca, in Zaragoza, with 73 inhabitants, at the head of the valley of the rambla de Ribota, at altitudes of between 860 and 1,177 metres. It was a hamlet until 1711 and a "lugar" from 1785, within the comunidad de aldeas de Calatayud; called simply Clarés until 1916, it then added "de Ribota". Its population, with around five hundred inhabitants in the first third of the 20th century, fell drastically with the rural exodus of the 1950s. The town centre preserves narrow streets, arches and passageways, with whitewashed façades and wrought-iron balconies. Its church, Nuestra Señora del Castillo, with a nave and circular apse, preserves Romanesque paintings; it belonged to the archdeaconry of Calatayud from 1280. On the municipal territory also stands the chapel of Santo Tomás.
