Berdejo
Village
Berdejo is a small municipality in the Comunidad de Calatayud comarca, in the province of Zaragoza, with 40 inhabitants (INE 2025) compared with the 210 it had in the mid-19th century. It lies at about 980 metres in altitude in the valley of the Manubles river, on the border with Soria. In ancient times it was known as Berdeio or Vergegium, names that have led to its history being confused with that of Berceo: tradition places San Millán here as priest of the local church around the year 560, when neighbouring Torrelapaja was still a district of Berdejo. The parish church remains dedicated to this saint, and remains of the medieval castle stand above the village. Its festivals are on 12 November, in honour of San Millán, and on 8 September, in honour of the Virgen del Río.
