Bijuesca
Village
Bijuesca is a small municipality in the Comunidad de Calatayud comarca, in Zaragoza, with 93 inhabitants, at about 900 metres in altitude in the valley of the Manubles river, on the border with Soria. Beside the 14th-century castle stands the chapel of the Virgen del Castillo, with a crenellated square tower and, inside, a 13th-century Romanesque carving and another in alabaster from the 15th century; in 1357 a fortified church was added. In the lower part, the parish church of San Miguel, with a square tower topped by machicolations, was built in the 17th century over a 12th-century Romanesque temple, of which the apse and two windows survive; the 2003 restoration uncovered the bases of its original columns. Every twenty-five years the Saca de la Virgen del Castillo is celebrated.
