Church of Santa María de Tobed Monument · Tobed, Comunidad de Calatayud, Zaragoza This fortified church, built by the Order of the Holy Sepulchre under the patronage of Henry of Trastámara and a reference point of Aragonese Mudéjar for its exposed brickwork and glazed ceramics, was constructed between 1356 and 1400. Its typology, defined by professor Gonzalo M. Borrás Gualis as a Mudéjar fortress-church, responds to the war between Peter IV of Aragon and Peter I of Castile: it served both as a temple and as a defensive structure near the border, conceived on the outside for combat, with a perimeter gallery and a defensive parapet walk. For its high altar, the painter Jaume Serra made a retable now kept at the Museo del Prado. Unesco added it in 2001 to the extension of the World Heritage listing of Mudéjar architecture of Aragon. siglo XIV Photo: FranchoBeltrán (CC BY-SA 3.0 es) What to see and do in Tobed
