What to see and do in El Burgo de Ebro

El Burgo de Ebro
Village
El Burgo de Ebro is a municipality in the Comarca Central of Aragon, 14 km from Zaragoza, on the banks of the Ebro river and at 183 metres above sea level, forming part of the Galachos del Ebro Nature Reserve, former meanders now turned into lagoons and a refuge for flora and fauna. It was called simply El Burgo until 1834, always depending administratively and judicially on Zaragoza, of which it came to be a district; it had an important Moorish aljama until 1610. The nearby site of La Cabañeta was founded in the 2nd century BC as the military camp of a Roman legion during the republican period. Its old church of San Pedro Apóstol, in late Mudejar style, disappeared and was replaced by a modern building. It now has 2,750 inhabitants.
Riverside Woods of the Ebro at El Burgo de Ebro
Nature
The riverbanks and riparian woods of the Ebro at El Burgo de Ebro form part of the Reserva Natural Dirigida de los Sotos y Galachos del Ebro, in the middle stretch of the river valley, about 14 kilometres from Zaragoza, in the Aragonese Comarca Central. This area preserves the galacho of El Burgo de Ebro, a former meander abandoned by successive changes in the riverbed, which together with the galachos of La Alfranca and La Cartuja makes up the reserve. On the banks, almost permanently flooded, meadows of paspalum grow beside the river, along with reedbeds and bulrushes in the galachos themselves.
Festivities of El Burgo de Ebro
Activity
The patronal festivities of El Burgo de Ebro are celebrated from 14 to 20 August in honor of San Roque (16 August), with a traditional dance revived after being suspended since 1936; at the end of April and beginning of May San Jorge and the Virgin are also celebrated, with a pilgrimage to her hermitage.
