What to see and do in Pastriz

Pastriz
Village
Pastriz is a municipality in the Comarca Central of Zaragoza, situated beside the río Ebro, with part of its municipal area within the Reserva natural dirigida de los Sotos y Galachos del Ebro, which includes the galacho of La Alfranca; its riverside woodland is part of the river's green corridor. Its name comes from the Latin pastoricium, public pasture, derived from pastor, which evolved through the forms pastoricio and pastricio to the present-day Pastriz. The first documents mentioning it date from the 12th century, although it became established as a village between the 13th and 14th centuries; the first official document to cite it is a set of ordinances of the Concejo de Zaragoza from 1459. Its market garden, irrigated by the Ebro, produces borage, thistle and artichoke in winter. It has 1,316 inhabitants.
Church of Pastriz
Monument
The church of San Pedro is the Catholic parish church of Pastriz, in the Zaragoza comarca of Central. It was built between the 15th and 16th centuries as a single nave of three bays with Gothic features; in the 17th century it was extended with two more bays and four side chapels flanking the nave, and in the 18th century the work was completed by adding a new tier to the tower. This has four tiers, the first three square in plan and the upper one octagonal, with brickwork decoration highlighted by friezes and corbelled string courses. On 8 July 2002 it was declared a Bien Catalogado del Patrimonio Cultural Aragonés (a heritage listing of the Aragón region).

Nature
The Soto de Pastriz is a riverside woodland of the Ebro, within the river's green corridor, forming part of the Reserva natural dirigida de los Sotos y Galachos del Ebro, declared on 8 April 1991 with an area of 1,536.7 hectares, to which is added a peripheral protection zone of a further 1,563.8 hectares spread across nine municipalities, among them Pastriz. Moving away from the water, tamarisks, willows, black poplars and narrow-leaved ashes appear, in that order, and colonies of heron-family birds are frequent, such as the black-crowned night heron. The stretch is included within the SCI and SPA Galachos de La Alfranca de Pastriz, La Cartuja y El Burgo de Ebro, part of the Natura 2000 network.

Food and drink
The huerta that surrounds Zaragoza produces in winter borage, cardoon and artichoke, central vegetables of the Aragonese recipe book. Borage is boiled and served with potato or with ham, and cardoon is prepared in almond sauce at Christmas meals.
