What to see and do in Villafranca de Ebro

Villafranca de Ebro
Village
Villafranca de Ebro is a town and municipality in the Comarca Central of Zaragoza, at 176 metres above sea level, beside the Ebro, whose floodplain forms a meander south of the municipal area. During the Muslim period a fortress was built, of which remains survive today, next to the Castillo de Alfajarín, and at its foot a settlement arose which, with the Reconquest, gave rise to Villafranca. It belonged to the Cornel family until 1437, when Juan Mur bought the Barony of Alfajarín; the epithet franca is due to the exemptions granted to it that year by Alfonso V. In 1703 Felipe V appointed Juan Miguel Iñíguez y Eraso first Marquis of Villafranca de Ebro; he had the Palacio del Marqués built, a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) since 1989. During the Civil War it was one of the few villages without political reprisals.
