What to see and do in Cuarte de Huerva

Cuarte de Huerva
Village
Cuarte de Huerva is a municipality in the Comarca Central of Zaragoza, situated on the bank of the río Huerva, at 298 metres above sea level and eight kilometres south of the capital, with which it borders via the Casablanca district. Until the 1916 naming reform it was simply called Cuarte; in the mid-19th century it had barely 203 inhabitants, and has since grown to become the fifth most populous town in the province, with more than 15,000 inhabitants and more than 370 companies in its industrial estates. It preserves the church of Santa Cruz y Santa Fe, and celebrates its festivals in honour of Santa Ana, from 21 to 26 July, and of the Virgen del Rosario, on the first weekend of October, with typically Aragonese cuisine.
Monastery of Santa Fe de Cuarte de Huerva
Monument
The Monastery of Santa Fe, in the municipal area of Cuarte de Huerva, was a Cistercian monastery founded in 1341 by Miguel Pérez Zapata, with monks from Fonclara. In 1443 Alfonso V granted it high and low criminal jurisdiction, and in 1808, during the siege of Zaragoza, French troops looted and burned it, killing several monks; in 1835 it was disentailed under Mendizábal's laws. The present building, Baroque-Classicist and largely from the 18th century, preserves a doorway from 1797 and a walled enclosure with cylindrical towers. Declared a national monument in 1979, it is now privately owned, largely abandoned, and a regular destination for cycle-touring routes.
Festivities of Cuarte de Huerva
Activity
Cuarte de Huerva celebrates its patron saint festivities in honour of Santa Ana from 26 July, with about ten days of programming, and the festivities of the Virgen del Rosario on the first Sunday of October.
