Mediana de Aragón
Village
Mediana de Aragón is a municipality in the Comarca Central, in the province of Zaragoza, situated about 30 km from the capital, in an area already inhabited in the Early Iron Age, as shown by the Iberian site of Los Castellazos, destroyed by Caesar. The town passed through several lordly hands, from the bequest of Alfonso II to his son Pedro II, until in 1368 the castle and the place were sold to the Fernández de Heredia family; it later belonged to the county of Fuentes, a regime that lasted until its municipal independence in 1834. Crossed by the río Ginel, which irrigates the municipal area before flowing into the Ebro, its economy is based on agriculture and sheep farming. Its salt lagoon was exploited in the 19th century to obtain sodium sulphate for the glass and soap industries.
